About Me

Teaching has been my path since my tenth grade Language Arts class. I was inspired to challenge myself in an accelerated English Language Arts class for my junior year of high school. My writing scores, however, were not at their strongest.

I approached my teacher, Mr. Parker. A true California hippie, Mr. Parker started each lesson with meditative journaling time and implemented weekly “Gingko Walks” to hone our haiku skills.

When I asked Mr. Parker for his advice about taking the advanced class, I was worried that I would not be able to keep up. He immediately assured me that I was capable of being successful with the right support.  For the rest of the semester, Mr. Parker edited my work diligently and took the time out of his schedule to help me become more comfortable in my craft. Ultimately, Mr. Parker was the main editor of my college entrance essay. In the essay, I wrote about my love of storytelling.

My love of storytelling meshes well with my love of history. History encompasses an infinite number of stories with MANY unreliable narrators. How we work through these narratives impacts how we see our present. The most impactful part of teaching social studies is getting students to understand how interconnected our past and our present are, and how they can make a difference in our future.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and Bachelor of Arts in History from Southern Methodist University. I am pursuing my master's in education, specializing in Special Education, and am set to graduate from SMU again in June of 2024.

Here are my first students! I was in 10th grade teaching writing skills to 3rd graders.
