To Future Students

Dear Future Students,

Ms. Martin here! I am so happy to be one of your teachers this year. As hard as it is to believe, I was you once. In fact, I am still you. We never stop learning, and now is the time to develop the fundamental skills that will guide you through the rest of your life. You will never stop experiencing new things, never stop working with others, and never cease to inspire. We may as well get practicing!

Social Studies has a stigma for being all about the past; let’s reimagine that. In our class, we will bring history alive (cliché, I know). We will connect our past to our present and understand how we are impacted by others’ actions. At the same time, we will criticize, celebrate, and compromise on the decision making of our ancestors.

Our classroom will be a positive, engaging, and maybe entertaining place. We will hold ourselves and each other accountable for fostering an inclusive learning environment. There is no place for hate in this classroom and respect for others is imperative. We will respect each other, our classroom, our community, and ourselves.

Being a young person is hard. There are so many obligations and expectations that overwhelm us. We must remember to effectively communicate, take initiative, and recognize when we need to ask for help. I want to be a resource for you, whether it be someone to talk to or somewhere to sit at lunch.

This year is going to be full of new ideas. Expectations are high, because I know that you are more than capable. With that, we all must show each other grace. We are here to learn, grow, and engage. I cannot wait to work with you all.

Best,

Ms. Martin

To Future Families

Dear Families,

My name is Emma Martin, and I am very excited to be one of your child’s teachers this school year. I want you to feel comfortable coming to me with any and all concerns regarding your child’s academic and emotional well-being in my classroom.

My background in special education gives me an informed perspective on different kinds of learners. I promote differentiated instruction to address the unique needs of each student. I also promote hands-on learning that is student-centered and engaging. If your child is struggling, we will work as a team to get them on a successful path.

I expect mutual respect and empathy between students, educators, and parents. If an issue arises, I hope that we can address it in a productive and professional manner. I hold myself accountable to being communicative and amendable. Our class will involve the exploration of different perspectives and I expect students to be responsive and respectful of their peers’ opinions.

I look forward to a great year! Thank you for trusting me with the education of your children. Again, do not be afraid to reach out or get involved.

Best,

Emma Martin
